MAKING SPACE: Exploring Vocal Expansion and Contraction

Since the Golden Age of the Bel Canto*, singers, voice teachers have been looking for the gola aperta, or the "open throat” to ensure healthy and powerful vocalizing.

This mysterious phenomenon has been explained in various ways through the centuries, and is now even well-understood by vocal researchers, but enjoying this special sense of open space while speaking and singing requires a coordinated organization of relationships throughout the respiratory and vocal systems as well as throughout the whole self.

This lesson will lead you through a series of movement and sound explorations that will bring new meaning to the old notion of the "open throat" and in the process make vocalizing - especially that of the loud variety - effortless and fun!
