about

SHAPING THE SOUND
Sound is mysterious in many ways: it is invisible, but present; ephemeral, but powerful. We can feel it, we can hear it, we make even make it with our own voices, but most of us understand very little about how that happens.

One of the most interesting mysteries is how the vibration from the vocal folds is shaped on the way out to create recognizable sounds and qualities.

Do you know what your voice would sound like if you did not have a head and mouth on top of your neck and throat? It wouldn’t sound anything like what you know to be your voice at all!

With all of the flexibility of the vocal mechanism, we shape the sound in many ways and we can learn to sense these shapes as we do so.

In this lesson, you will begin to get a clear sense of the shape of the space above your vocal folds, the space created by the movable tube of structures that make up your vocal tract and you will learn to mold it in many interesting and useful ways. The sound will change of course, but so will your sense of your voice, and most importantly your sense of what you are capable of, vocally and otherwise!
