about

The "vocal tract" is the space created by the anatomical structures that link the lips to the vocal folds (the tongue, palate, epiglottis, etc.).

Fundamentally, both singing and speaking are the result of the many complex, simultaneous movements and interactions within the vocal tract itself, yet for so many of us the focus of voice training tends to be on breathing (that which lies below the vocal folds) and resonance (above, in the nasal passages). While improving both breath and resonance can be quite helpful, without learning to sense and organize the primary movements in the vocal tract certain aspects of vocalization will likely remain difficult or even impossible.

This lesson* will take a somatic approach to reorganizing the vocal tract through a series of experiments involving the cardinal movements of the tongue/hyoid bone/larynx complex. These movements will be differentiated from and connected to tone, breath and resonance in a way that will integrate the entire vocal system and bring more vocal agility and freedom, better tuning...

...and it might even help with that pesky double-chin!

*the picture of the tongue referenced in the recording is the "cover art" for this track.
